I like the way that these seven trees have merged into one canopy. I am attracted to the shapes that trees make, especially deciduous trees in winter.
This is more or less the way that Henry VIII left this ancient Abbey after the dissolution of the Monastries in England, Wales and Ireland almost 500 years ago. The Abbey had been on this site for a shade under 400 years prior to the dissolution.
I took this shot on a floodlit evening, Fountains Abbey is floodlit and remains open to the public until after dark each year and is a truly atmosheric experience.
I was on a weekend photography trip with a couple of friends up in Northumberland and we found ourselves on the beach just to the north of Bamburgh Castle. We spent an hour there shooting the castle from various positions. After a few dozen shots and not really satisfied with my efforts I turned and looked at the dunes as the sun was going down behind them and I saw what was my favourite shot of the day. It was very windy and I thought about a slow shutter speed to catch the movement in the grasses but the image is so minimalistic that the subject of the shot, the grasses, had to be in focus. With the grasses blurred it didn’t work . . . . for me.
Walking about on Holy Island up in Northumberland earlier this year I found a pile of ropes that I liked the look of. There are lots of opportunities on Lindisfarne for capturing great subjects. While I was there a group of Nuns arrived and started to cross over to the tiny island of St Cuthberts which has a shrine to the Saint on it. Cuthbert spent ten years on Lindisfarne before spending some time on the little Islet he believed he was ‘called’ to be a hermit before moving on to Inner Farne where he continued his Hermitage for ten years before the Church called him to come out of Hermitage and made him a Bishop.
A field barn near Appltreewick. I really like the form, textures and shapes that the dry stone walls give when dividing up the land in North Yorkshire. This was taken in July and I found the very vibrant greens and yellows a little distracting. I had previously tried knocking back the saturation and vibrance but it didn’t really do it for me. So today I have gone back to the image and used LR3 to convert to B &W and removed all the green and yellow colour information. Along with a couple of other tweaks here and there I got this image and I am pleased with the graphic qualities of it.
I’m just glad didn’t bin it after being a bit frustrated with it initially.
